CPCE Spotlight: Tracey Morris

Our CPCE Spotlight is where professionals share their motivation behind earning their Certified Professional in Catering and Events (CPCE). This month we are featuring Tracey Morris, CPCE, Senior Corporate Catering Manager at the Marriott Cityplace in Spring, Texas, a new property that is less than a year old.

If you are interested in being featured, please contact cpce@nace.net.

Q. How did you first learn about the CPCE program?

A. I learned about the CPCE program from my former boss, who is deeply involved in NACE. She used to talk about it all of the time, but I never got involved because I felt like I didn’t have time for it. As you know, in this industry, our work schedule is ever-changing based upon the events that we have, so I just couldn’t see myself carving out any additional time for studying since I was already working 50+ hours per week.

Q. What or who encouraged you to consider applying?

A. Margery Reinheardt, CPCE, Director of Catering, at the Hilton Post Oak Houston hotel. But others involved in NACE also encouraged me to apply (Jill Vidal Raines, CPCE and Gary Baumann, CPCE).

Q. Do you believe CPCE certification helped you achieve your current position?

A. YES!!!! I think the more skills you have, the better equipped you are. I have never been on a pre-opening team before and it was much harder than I thought because there are no established clients. I have had so many clients ask me what CPCE stands for and I am able to tell them. I think it makes them feel more at ease knowing that I have expertise in this field.

Q. Any tips for future applicants of CPCE?

A. Don’t let excuses keep you from fulfilling your dreams!!

Q. Do you have any stories to share about how the CPCE letters behind your name have helped express to colleagues, clients, employers, or others your knowledge and experience in the catering and events industry?

A. When Hurricane Harvey hit the Gulf Coast in September 2017, that was the moment that changed my life. As I was sitting at home, with no electricity for several days, I decided that I wanted more out of my life and that doing the same thing and expecting a different result, which wasn’t getting me anywhere. At that point, once the electricity came back on, I decided to sign up and take the CPCE pre-requisite classes and start studying for the exam. Now, when clients see those letters on my business card, and in my email signature, they ask me what it stands for and I proudly tell them, and they are very impressed.

Q. What might fellow CPCEs be surprised to learn about you?

A. I have been in the hospitality industry for about 20 years, even though I look young! I LOVE planning events!

Q. Do you have a favorite CPCE memory?

A. Going to my first NACE Experience Conference in July 2018 in Palm Springs, California and being acknowledged on stage for achieving the CPCE certification.

Q. What is your favorite part of the catering and events industry?

A. I love helping clients achieve their vision. It is especially rewarding to see a smile on the client’s face the day of their event.
