CPCE Spotlight: Taylor Kyte, CPCE, CMP

Our CPCE Spotlight is where professionals share their motivation behind earning the Certified Professional in Catering and Events (CPCE). This month we are featuring Taylor Kyte, CPCE, CMP, Senior Event Manager for the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority.

Q. Please provide some background on your current position and organization, as well as your path to getting there.

A. I am currently a Senior Event Manager at the Charlotte Convention Center where I’ve been since May 2017. Previously, I held a similar position at a small conference center in Johnson City, Tennessee, a Hotel Sales Coordinator role in Knoxville, Tennessee, and an Event Assistant position with the University of Tennessee Athletic Event Management. I also serve as the Director of Communications for the Charlotte Chapter of NACE!

Q. How has CPCE certification helped your career to date?

A. I have always enjoyed learning so when I joined NACE in February 2019 & learned more about CPCE, I knew it was a goal I wanted to accomplish soon. I think professional certifications are an important way to show your dedication to advancement and education. It has shown my organization’s leaders and colleagues that I am serious about my career and want to do my absolute best.

Q: What are your professional goals for the next 5, 10, 20+ years?

A. I’m looking forward to becoming a Director of Events or Operations, then a General Manager in the future. I love being on the venue side of events, so I plan to stay on the provider side of things.

Q. Any tips for future applicants of CPCE?

A. Ask other CPCEs for tips! I think any of us would be happy to provide guidance.

Q. Do you have a favorite CPCE memory?

A. I just love providing guidance to others who are interested. NACE has created such a close-knit group in Charlotte, we are always available to help each other. I also served as a proctor so 4 of my NACE Charlotte friends could take the exam…  they all passed!

Q. What is your favorite or most memorable part of working in the catering and events industry?

A. I am very Type A & a little bit of a control freak, so the planning portion of an event is almost therapeutic for me. My favorite part is seeing an event come to life and the collaboration from my team to make it happen. I really love seeing an event go the way I had envisioned… with a happy client and happy attendees.

Get to know Taylor a bit more:

Taylor Kyte, CMP, CPCE is a Senior Event Manager at the Charlotte Convention Center & the Director of Communications for NACE Charlotte. She has over 10 years of experience in the events industry ranging from weddings and athletics to events for 12,000 people. After working for Athletic Event Management during college and taking a hotel sales gig shortly after graduation, she moved back to her hometown in East Tennessee to take a Conference Coordinator role at the same place where she was once a banquet server. In May 2017, Taylor picked up and moved to Charlotte to accept her current role. She graduated with a Bachelors in Service Management and a Masters in Sport Management from the University of Tennessee where she also learned to really love college football and a good tailgate party. One of her biggest joys is supporting her 2 favorite cousins, Jake and Grace at their high school and college sporting events back home in Tennessee. She recently got a new roommate… a Westie/Maltese puppy named MJ who has been a great work-from-home partner!
