CPCE Spotlight: Lyndsey Bunn

Our CPCE Spotlight is where professionals share their motivation behind earning the Certified Professional in Catering and Events (CPCE). This month we are featuring Lyndsey Bunn, CPCE, Catering Manager at Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno, Nevada.

Q. How did you first learn about the CPCE program?

A. I heard about the CPCE program almost immediately after joining the Tahoe/Reno Chapter of NACE. We only had one CPCE in the chapter at the time, but they made it a point to encourage our members to apply.

Q. What or who encouraged you to consider applying?

A. When I started my CPCE journey, there were two other CPCEs in my chapter who really encouraged me. I could see how they valued the accomplishment. When I started asking questions, they were the best motivation to get started and inspiration to keep moving forward.

Q. Please provide some background on your current position and company. How long have you been there, what is your role?

A. I am currently going into my third year as a catering manager at the Peppermill Resort Spa and Casino in Reno, Nevada. I previously worked here in 2012 and 2013 when I was brand new to the industry. While I largely work with weddings, fundraisers and other social events, I do have the opportunity to work with large convention groups and participate in a variety of community events.

Q. Do you believe CPCE certification helped you achieve your current position?

A. In this instance, I was already in my current role, but I think it was a great motivator. Achieving CPCE has pushed me to continue expanding my knowledge and skills. I think employers recognize motivation and determination.

Q. Any tips for future applicants of CPCE?

A. Go for it! Even if you experience setbacks in finding time to study or think you might not pass. Some of the best event professionals I know have struggled, so you are not alone. It’s so worth it once you achieve it.

Q. Do you have any stories to share about how the CPCE letters behind your name have helped express to colleagues, clients, employers, or others your knowledge and experience in the catering and events industry?

A. Explaining the letters gives me the opportunity to share my passion for the events industry. CPCE helps to convey not just my current level of knowledge, but also my dedication to continued growth and education.

Q. What might fellow CPCEs be surprised to learn about you?

A. It took me three years to achieve my CPCE. I changed jobs, got distracted, and had some health issues, but in the end, I kept coming back to it. I knew it was something I really wanted.

Q. Do you have a favorite CPCE memory?

A. I really enjoyed my CPCE Fast Track group. Going through the session introduced me to even more awesome event professionals. I was really proud when we all passed. I left the 2018 NACE Experience Conference in Palm Springs, California with my CPCE and new friends.

Q. What is your favorite part of the catering and events industry?

A. I like how it feels like the sky is the limit with events. As an industry, we create amazing things and bring people together.

Get to know Lyndsey a bit more: 

Lyndsey Bunn, CPCE, is currently Catering Manager at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno, Nevada. She describes herself as a Portland girl in a Reno world, a cat lady, a food, beer, and wine enthusiast, and an art and theater lover. Lyndsey is a University of Nevada and Delta Delta Delta Alumna. When not working, she loves traveling, spending time with friends, and volunteering in various places around Reno/Tahoe (including on my local NACE board of directors). Lyndsey is looking forward to 2020 as her eighth year in the industry and as she starts working toward her new goal, CMP.
