CPCE Spotlight: Lexi Herman

Our CPCE Spotlight is where professionals share their motivation behind earning their Certified Professional in Catering and Events (CPCE). This month we are featuring Lexi Herman, CPCE, Director of Catering at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville, Florida.

Q. How did you first learn about the CPCE program?

A. I first learned about the CPCE program in 2016, from communication from the NACE National Office. I had been a NACE member for a few years at that point, but wasn’t engaging at a high level. In 2016 I decided to start putting more in, and one of the first things that caught my eye was the CPCE program.

Q. What or who encouraged you to consider applying?

A. I knew I wanted to pursue certification or higher learning to invest in myself, and to prove to clients and employers that I take my personal growth seriously. The leadership team at my previous property was an avid supporter of professional growth and certification and encouraged me to pursue whatever path I wanted. CPCE gave me the flexibility to study at my own pace through online education courses, and covered such a wide breadth of knowledge between the different sections—it was an easy choice.

Q. Please provide some background on your current position and company. How long have you been there, what is your role?

A. I have been the Director of Sales and Catering at Timuquana Country Club for just over 2 years. I relocated to the area from Washington, DC for the position. I’m responsible for providing full planning services to our members for their private events, including weddings and holiday parties, as well as designing and executing events we host for the full membership, such as themed cocktail parties, golf tournaments, and our annual food & wine festival. Like most jobs in this business, it’s always different and never dull!

Q. Do you believe CPCE certification helped you achieve your current position?

A. I had already accepted my current position before getting my CPCE, but hadn’t started the job yet. I successfully achieved CPCE about one month before my start date, and I was able to negotiate for a salary increase and a title change based on the certification. It was a very direct and clear result of obtaining my certification.

Q. Any tips for future applicants of CPCE?

A. This is an investment in yourself—and you deserve it! Stick with it, make it a priority, and trust you’ll come out the other side better for doing it.

Q. Do you have any stories to share about how the CPCE letters behind your name have helped express to colleagues, clients, employers, or others your knowledge and experience in the catering and events industry?

A. Most of my clients have never heard of the CPCE, but seeing it on my cards or email signature is often a conversation starter! It’s a great opportunity to open a line of communication about my experience and skill set, and further builds the client’s trust in myself and in the Club. It’s also helped me grow my involvement within NACE, through my local board position and assisting on national committees. It’s certainly opened doors I had never considered.

Q. What might fellow CPCEs be surprised to learn about you?

A. I’m an avid baker—planners and event pros spend so much of their time in grey areas, I find the methodical nature of baking such a welcome break from that. The week before my exam, I came to work every day with a different cake!

Q. What is your favorite part of the catering and events industry?

A. There are so many aspects I enjoy, but at the end of the day, I love making people happy. Being allowed to shape the biggest moments of people’s lives is such a privilege. How many people get to say that their job is to make memories?

Lexi Herman, CPCE, is the Director of Sales & Catering at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville, Florida. She became CPCE certified in 2017. She currently serves as President of the Northeast Florida chapter of NACE, as well as serving on the National Certification Committee. Lexi and her boyfriend Ryan are the proud owners of two dogs, one cat, and six coffee brewing systems, and she is an avid believer in breakfast for every meal.

    Hello !

    My name is Monique Staten ! This is such an inspiration! A push in the right direction. Since I could remember i have always had a dream to be a outstanding, over the top, different from the rest event planner . I’ve seen NACE and how inspiring and influential it has become . This is something I desire .. I want a start I want to thrive and I need help .. I have years experience in the dental field and currently I’m a stay at home mom. I would love to be invited to the NACE gala in San Antonio but this is as far as I have gotten ! I hope this comes by someone who reads my cries but feels potential in each and every word I have written .
