People in the event planning industry are an ambitious bunch. You'd have to be to want to work in one of the more stressful jobs in the country, according to a report from Forbes.
That said, many readers are undoubtedly frustrated with their current positions in the events industry and are hungry to advance their careers.
Today, LinkedIn can provide savvy users with a goldmine of career enhancement options, that is, if the platform is used correctly. This article will offer a few tips for readers searching for a way to move up the corporate ladder, or to find a great new job.
But before I dive in, the most important thing for readers to realize is that it is important to use LinkedIn in the first place. Approximately 400 million people log into LinkedIn each month. It's a fast growing social media platform that has become a key tool for hiring managers and recruiters.
Now that that bit of housekeeping is out of the way, let's begin.
1. Make Use Of Your LinkedIn Headline
The headline feature is available to everyone who has a LinkedIn account. It provides users with 120 characters to write a short summary that will pop up whenever a preview of your profile is showed on LinkedIn.
Crafting a compelling headline can mean the difference between someone viewing your profile, and someone skipping over it, so it is important for people in the events industry to make use of.
Rather than simply writing your job title and the company you work for, get creative. If you're an event organizer consider writing something like:
Professional Event Planner creating memorable experiences that inspire event attendees.
A compelling headline will also make your profile more searchable, since terms like “event planner” or “creating memorable experiences” are things that potential clients or employers are certainly searching for on LinkedIn.
2. Craft An Amazing Summary
The summary on your LinkedIn profile is the ideal place to describe who you are as a working professional. The summary sets the stage for people viewing your LinkedIn profile, and it is a fantastic place to highlight the career accomplishments you are most proud of.
Typically, great summaries make use of the 3 paragraph principle. The first paragraph, typically one or two sentences long, is like your personal mission statement.
The second paragraph should also be short, it's the place to make your career goals clear.
The third paragraph is where you can go into more detail about what you're doing now, and about any key accomplishments you think visitors should be aware of.

Pulse is LinkedIn's internal blog that is open to any LinkedIn user. It's a fantastic tool for people in the event planning industry to gain some attention.
Craft a blog post that is somehow helpful to others. It can talk about a solution you've found to a common event planning problem, or it can recap your experience planning or working on a recent event.
Make sure that the Pulse article is well written, and features a compelling title that other LinkedIn users will want to click. Then post the article to Pulse and share a link to it as a LinkedIn update.
Thanks to LinkedIn Pulse's easy to use reporting tools, you will be able to see how many people view the article. You'll also be able to see who engaged with it (shared or commented on the piece). In time, as you publish multiple articles, you should see the number of people viewing your articles and your LinkedIn profile, increase.
By publishing helpful content to Pulse, you'll be helping to establish a clear personal brand, something that's important for anyone interested in moving up in the events industry.
4. Join LinkedIn Groups To Add Value
There are a number of active communities on LinkedIn for people in the events industry. Many people in the event planning industry fail to understand the point of LinkedIn groups.
Groups serves to bring people together, they are not an ideal tool to promote your personal initiatives. Instead, people in the events industry should get involved in Groups in order to help others. Comment on questions fellow community members ask. Link to articles that you've found to be helpful.
Provide value to your fellow Group members and you will be helping to grow your personal network and brand.
Choose to publish self-promotional content in Groups, and you'll be marked as a “spammer” and your posts will be ignored or deleted.
LinkedIn can be a fantastic tool for people in the events industry. After all, our world is often so busy that networking with one another in-person seems nearly impossible.
LinkedIn can provide ambitious people in the events industry with an opportunity to advance their careers by establishing some notoriety online.
Moreover, LinkedIn has become a key tool used by hiring managers and recruiters. If you apply for a job, expect to have your LinkedIn profile viewed by decision makers. If you're profile is well-made, and if you have a clear and powerful presence on LinkedIn, you'll be more likely to land a new job or to secure a new client.
